Kuranda Skyrail and Train

Want to travel both in style and comfort? This Kuranda Skyrail and Train tour is undoubtedly the tour for you. You will experience some of our iconic trademarks of the region, Skyrail Rainforest Cableway and Kuranda Scenic Rail, and also visit the idyllic Kuranda village.

Skyrail Rainforest Cableway

Firstly, travel from Cairns to Kuranda on the iconic Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. As you ascend the mountainside, enjoy stunning views out to the ocean. At the same time, gaze across the expansive UNESCO-listed Wet Tropics Rainforest canopy.

The Skyrail stretches across the Kuranda range for 7.5km. Along the way, there are two mid-stations, Red Peak and Barron Falls. These stations certainly provide a lot of information about this environment. Follow the walks to scenic lookouts over the Rainforest. Join ranger-guided tours to hear about the local Flora and Fauna. After that, take some time to visit the CSIRO Interpretation station to learn more!

One of the highlights of this trip is visiting the ‘The Edge’ lookout. Sitting right above the thunderous Barron Falls, the views are stunning. These falls, also known as Din Din, are sacred locations. They have been central to storytelling for the Djabuganydji people for thousands of years.

For the most part, we recommend allowing 1.5 hours of travel time. This way, you can truly experience all that is on offer. This Skyrail experience includes exploring Red Peak and Barron Falls Station.

Kuranda

As soon as you arrive in Kuranda, Visitors are welcomed to ‘the village in the rainforest’. Instantly you will see why Kuranda Village has been a favourite to visitors from the early 1900s.

In the 1960’s Kuranda became popular because of its climate and lifestyle. It is home to vibrant characters, quirky shops, musicians, and artists. Lush, dense tropical rainforests surround all.

The Original Kuranda Markets have now become a name of their own! Each stall offers various items, from arts and crafts and unique souvenirs to homemade jerky and chilli. There is an excellent selection of local produce and locally designed and made fashion. Also, keep your eye out for hand-crafted jewellery, leather products, woodwork and gemstones.

Although you will work up an appetite, you won’t be short on options in the village! Boutique restaurants and cafes line the main street. See if you can find those hidden among the markets. Try some delicious bush tucker, or even find yourself feasting on a german sausage at the German Tucker Wursthouse. Don’t forget to try the Käseknacker!!

While Kuranda is not just about Markets and Food, many wildlife encounters exist. Take some time to visit the Butterfly Sanctuary, home to the largest butterfly flight aviary and exhibit in Australia. Interact with over 60 native and exotic birds at Birdworld, where you can also see a Cassowary. Lastly, visit the Koala Gardens and take the time to learn more about our unique Australian animals. It is home to our beautiful Koalas, Kangaroos, Wombats and more!

Nevertheless, Kuranda Village always has something for everyone to enjoy.

Scenic Railway

Soon your day will come to a close, and it will be time to join the Kuranda Scenic Railway for the journey home. In the 1880s, the construction of the Kuranda Railway began. Tin Miners working hard in Herberton to the west of Cairns needed an easier way to obtain supplies. Due to the frequent rain, the roads that led to the coast became boggy and difficult to travel. Undoubtedly, the construction of this railway was a massive feat for this period. Including fifteen handmade tunnels and 37 bridges, many lives were lost during construction.

In June of 1891, the railway between Cairns and Kuranda opened up to passenger travel. The rest, we say, is history! By the 1930s, Kuranda had become a hit with tourists. To this day, they continue to enjoy the old-world charm of the experience.

On your journey back to Cairns, marvel over the views of the World Heritage-listed rainforest. Gaze down the steep mountainside drops where the gushing waterfalls end in creeks and pools. Complete your journey by experiencing the refurbished original heritage carriages. Alternatively, you can upgrade your ticket to relax in the Gold Class Carriage. This is one of Australia’s most scenic railway trips and the easiest way to experience the Kuranda Skyrail and Train.
